The songs have been sung. The food is eaten, and the visitors have gone home. As much as we love the holidays, they eventually have to end. When that time comes, it’s time to start thinking about cleanup.

Using a live tree and live greenery to decorate for the holidays is nice, but once the holidays end, they can be difficult to clean up. If you haven’t prepared properly, the needles can get everywhere and sap can seep into your floors, carpets, and upholstery. To help you minimize the damage to your home, we’ve gathered a few suggestions on the best ways to dispose of your live holiday decor.

This is the third and final post in a series of blog posts teaching you how to care for and dispose of your live decorations during the holiday season. Previously, we’ve shared tips on how to prepare your home and display live decorations, as well as instructions on how to take care of your greenery.

Remove the Lights and Decorations

That tree isn’t going anywhere until you pull down the lights and ornaments. The same is true for the garlands and wreaths, if you’ve strung lights on them. When you’re removing ornaments from the tree, start from the bottom and work your way up. That way, when you’re reaching for ornaments that have been hung up high, you won’t accidentally knock down and break those that are hung lower. When storing fragile ornaments, wrap them in tissue. You can place them in old egg cartons to keep them all separate so they don’t knock together in storage and break.

When you remove the lights, start from where you finished hanging them and work backwards. Take your time, looping them around your forearm, one string at a time. Wrap a twist tie or zip tie around the middle to keep them from unraveling and getting tangled. When removing lights from garlands, don’t rush. Slowly unwind the lights from the garland and banisters and store them the same as the lights from the tree.

Take the Tree Outside

This is probably the most intimidating part of cleanup, but it doesn’t have to be. Still, it’s a good idea to have at least two people on hand to complete the job. Remove the tree skirt and lay a sheet down around the base of the tree, covering as much of the floor underneath as possible. Shake out as many of the dried needles as you can. Use a turkey baster to remove and dispose of any excess water in the tree stand. At this point, there are two popular methods to disposing the tree. Choose whichever one works best for you.

Wrap It Up and Cart It Out — If you took our advice and placed a tree bag under the tree when you first set things up, this should be easy. Simply pull the bag up around the tree. If not, then take a large bed sheet and wrap it around the tree. Clear a path from the tree to the closest exit, moving furniture if necessary. Then, with the help of another person, carry the tree outside, taking care not to knock over lamps, pictures, or other obstacles. Once you have gotten the tree outside, remove the bag or sheet, as well as the tree stand if it’s still attached.

Remove the Boughs — Some people prefer to remove the boughs inside to make it easier to get the tree through the house without bumping into things. Using pruning shears, cut the boughs off the tree and place into a large bucket. As the bucket fills up, take it outside to dispose of the clippings. Once the limbs are removed, the remaining trunk should be easy to cart outside without bumping into things.

Dispose of the Tree, Wreaths, and Garlands

Many cities have curbside pickup for Christmas trees, so disposal might just be a matter of carting it to the street. Call your city’s recycling coordinator or waste disposal office to find out if they offer this service. Trees and wreaths that have been painted or flocked (sprayed with decorations like glitter or fake snow) can’t be composted. These should be thrown in the garbage instead.

If your city does not offer pickup, or if you waited too long to take down your decorations, then you will need to dispose of it yourself. Contact your city to get a list of composting facilities where you can take your tree. You could also leave it in your garden until spring and put it through a wood chipper to turn it into mulch. You can cut off the boughs and use them as spacers when you mulch your garden to allow easier flow for air and water.

Sweep (Don’t Vacuum) the Needles

While your first impulse might be to just vacuum up all the needles that your tree drops—and it willdrop needles, no matter how careful you are—this is actually a bad idea. Needles and vacuums are not friends. They tend to get stuck in all the worst parts of your vacuum, clump up together, and clog the airflow. The clogs don’t always show up immediately, either. Sometimes they only partially block the flow, but gather dust as you continue to vacuum over time. Eventually, they can completely stop up your vacuum.

Once you have swept, you can wrap a piece of duct tape around your hand (sticky side facing out) and pat the area to pick up stray needles with the tape. If the tape gets full, simply dispose of it and start with a new piece.

Clean Up Spills and Sap

Chances are that even after you have cleared the needles, there will still be a mess left behind. For smaller sap stains, you can moisten a washcloth with rubbing alcohol and dab at the sap to remove it. Make sure to use a white washcloth so the colors won’t bleed and stain your carpet. A Guide to Christmas Decoration Part 2

Using fresh greenery to decorate for the holidays rather than artificial alternatives is a great way to keep your home festive. But if you don’t care for it as the season progresses, it can lead to a big mess for you to deal with when the decorations come down. Fortunately, with the proper care and some intermediary carpet cleaning, you can enjoy the bright color and fresh scent of living greenery while still minimizing the impact on your carpet, rugs, tile, and furniture.

This is the second in a series of blog posts teaching you how to take care of your live decorations this holiday season. Last week, we discussed how to prepare your home and set up your new natural decorations. This week, we’re focusing on how to maintain your decorations over the course of the season.

Water Frequently

Trees need water, and lots of it. Just sprinkling a little bit of water at the base will mean a lot of dropped needles, which will lead to a bigger clean-up and most likely a more intense carpet cleaning once the season is over. Aim for about one quart of water for every inch in diameter of your tree’s trunk.

You don’t need to get fancy by adding anything to the water, either. Some people add tree food, aspirin, corn syrup, ginger ale or other carbonated drinks to the water. There’s isn’t any scientific proof that this extends the life of the tree, though, and it can be unsafe for curious pets who decide to take a drink or lead to a bigger mess that’s harder to clean up if you accidentally spill.

Wreaths and garlands require less frequent watering—every few days should do it, though it depends on where it is displayed. A wreath that is hung outside in a cooler climate may not need any watering at all, while a wreath that is in a warmer or climate or displayed indoors will need frequent watering. Fill a spray bottle with water and spritz it every few days. If it looks like it could use a pick-me-up, go ahead and spray it more regularly. Also, be aware that overwatering pine cones on a wreath can cause them to close up, but only temporarily.

Check Regularly for Sap Leakage

Sometimes, your tree and greenery will leak sap from its trunk and branches. If you’re not careful, these leaks can get onto your clothes, nearby furnishings or even onto your carpet. The sooner you find these leaks, the better. The longer the sap sits, the more difficult it will be to remove without damaging the carpet or upholstery.

Vacuum and Sweep Daily

Even trees, wreaths, and garlands receiving the best care will drop some needles, so clean them up as soon as possible. Use a dustpan and a hand brush or a handheld vacuum, because the needles can clog bigger vacuums. Sweep every day beneath greenery displayed over tile and hardwood floors, especially in high traffic areas. The needles can get ground down under foot and scratch your hardwood or make a deeper tile and grout cleaning necessary.

Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat Sources

{C}{C}{C}While sunlight is great for plants that are in the ground, it can wreak havoc on your holiday decorations. Too much sunlight will dry out your wreaths and garlands and cause them to drop needles more quickly. If you keep them away from direct sunlight, as well as from heat sources like heater vents, they will last much longer. Even so, wreaths and garlands that are displayed outside will probably last a couple of weeks longer than those hung indoors.

A Guide to Decorating for the Holidays part 1

The holiday season is upon us and, as the classic song says, it really is “the most wonderful time of the year.” The sparkling lights along with the sounds of holiday music and the nervous chatter of children waiting to meet Santa are instant reminders of the season. The scents of gingerbread and fresh pine decorations fill the air and make everything feel festive. In our fast-paced, modern lives some people forego those fresh pine decorations and put up artificial arrangements to save precious time. But there’s really nothing quite like the look and smell of fresh, live decorations and trees.

This is the first in a series of blog posts that will teach you the best ways to select, display, and care for live decorations this holiday season, while keeping your home clean and healthy. For now, we will be focusing on how to make your home more festive using live decorations, but be sure to check in over the next few weeks to learn about maintenance and post-holiday cleaning as well!

Choosing the Right Decorations

Step one is to buy decorations that are less likely to drop needles and pitch all over your clean carpets and floorboards. As you’re deciding what type of tree, wreaths, and garlands to buy, pay attention to the overall color of the greenery. If it is faded, or if the younger, fresher needles on the exterior fall off easily, you probably want to keep looking.

Pre-Soak Garlands and Wreaths

You want your greenery to start off as hydrated as possible, so as soon as you get home, put your garlands and wreaths into a good soak bath. A bathtub will do fine, and it will give the decorations room to soak without getting bent or crushed. Let it soak for about 24 hours, then prop it up inside the drained tub to give it an opportunity to dry.

Selecting the Right Tree

If you plan to buy a pre-cut tree from a nursery, retail store or even a scout troop, ask them how recently the trees were harvested, and where they came from. If you aren't impressed with the answers, shop elsewhere. Also inspect the trees yourself by feeling the needles: they should be flexible, not dry and brittle. The fresher the tree, the longer it will last in your living room.

Find the Perfect Setting for Your Tree

Keep the tree away from direct sunlight, heaters or fans, as these will speed up the drying process. Andersen suggests using a room humidifier, which can help keep the needles fresher longer, as well as reduce fire risk.

Speaking of fire risk, make sure any lights you put on the tree are in good working order, and are designed for the purpose. Newer LED (light emitting diode) holiday lights cost only pennies a season to run, so they are a good value, while they also decrease fire risk because they stay cooler. Also make sure to keep any open flames away from the tree.

Lay Down a Plastic Tree Bag Under the Tree

This will help with your cleanup when January rolls around. When it’s time to take the tree down, you will be able to pull it up over the tree and carry it out of the house without leaving a trail of needles and sap. You can cover the tree bag with a festive holiday tree skirt.

Trim the Trunk Before Putting Putting Up Your Tree

Before you place your tree in the basin or pot that will hold it and provide it with water for the next several weeks, remove a slice off of the bottom of the trunk. Trees form a protective layer of sap after they are cut that hardens and seals it from moisture, so it becomes difficult for the tree to absorb water and nutrients. By cutting the tree just before you put it in water, you can prevent that seal from hardening and allow your tree access to the moisture it needs to prevent it from drying out and dropping needles everywhere. A hack saw or hand saw should be able to handle the job. If you have a chain saw, that will work too. Please use caution and always wear safety glasses! Most live tree sellers offer this service as a courtesy, so be sure to ask when you purchase your tree!

Use a Big Enough Basin

As a rule, a tree will absorb as much as one quart of water each day per inch in the trunk’s diameter, so make sure that you’re using a basin that can hold plenty of liquid. For example, a tree with a four-inch trunk would require a basin that holds at least one gallon of water.

How to deal with pet urine odor and other odors on carpets or upholstery what is fact and fiction?

There are many sites and home remedies that are suggested out there on how to deal with it.  We can help you with what to do and what not to do.

Here are some facts:
-the problem is much bigger than what you see:  Many people see a baseball sized spot and think that is it.  The truth is as soon as the urine soaks below your carpet backing, it spreads out.  What might be a baseball sized spot is actually the size of a soccer ball underneath.
-Once urine is left to sit, the warm, acidic liquid becomes a breeding ground for bacteria
-The acidic urine begins to oxidize on the carpet fibers.  This can sometimes create permanent color change on your carpet
-Urine can last for years in carpet.  It can take up to 5 years for bacteria to completely consume urine crystals, off gasing a urine odor the entire time.
-Male animals often urinate around perimeters and females are more likely to urinate in open areas.
-Animals are creatures of habit and often return to the same areas, even after urine is removed
-The average dog urinates 22 gallons in a year and a cat approximately 11 gallons!
-Once the urine begins to dry, the moisture evaporates and microscopic salts and crystals are formed.  These salts and crystals remain in your carpet, pad and floor and can no longer be treated by simple cleaning or over the counter products...This would require professional help.
-The crystals and salts react to the humidity in the air.  Any humidity level changes cause the crystals and salts to give off a heavier urine smell.  This is why you often smell it worse on rainy or hot humid days.

What can you do?
-May sound simplistic, but keep an eye on your animal so you know the extent of the problem.  Animals will often go over and over again in the same spot without you knowing.  Many people think their pet has only gone once because they have one spot, where in fact they may have gone a dozen times on the same spot, and often homeowners are left believing it is just the original coming back to cause a problem again.

-Blot urine stains immediately.  Soak up as much as you can.  The longer your wait the worse it gets.  A small wet/dry vac can be very useful.  Having an easy portable suction to get that urine up quickly is a great tool.  Just be sure to rinse.  If you don't rinse, you will regret it the next time you turn that vacuum on!

-If you have a wet/dry vac, you can rinse with plain water from the outside in.  Do not pour directly in the middle of the spot...this just will displace the urine outward causing the urine to spread and making your problem worse.

-Most products you can buy in store are temporary fixes and the same goes for most carpet cleaning companies.  They will usually just deodorize, temporarily covering up the odor, or sanitize, which does kill odor causing bacteria eliminating some odor, but it does not break down the urine crystals that have formed if urine is greater than 2 days old.  Then bacteria re-grows feeding off the urine crystals and the odor eventually comes back
